A short Story: From the darkness to Love

Once upon a time, in the bustling city, lived a woman named Emma. Growing up, Emma experienced a tough childhood filled with hardship, confusion, and pain that she carried like a silent tumour – a quiet heartache deeply engraved on her heart.

Emma lived with a burden of brutality from her broken family, a product of a bitter divorce when she was just eight. Her parents, once loving and affectionate, had forgotten their roles as caregivers in the midst of their wars. That was when Emma’s world turned from bright colours to a dull, dimly lit reality.

As she navigated into adulthood, Emma’s heart heavy with past wounds, she tapped into her resilience. She built walls around herself, not allowing her painful past to seep into her driven, independent present. She found success in her career, becoming a graphic designer for a reputable company, and used her work as an escape, where she could create a world of her own.

However, no matter how high Emma’s walls were, echoes of her past knocked on the doors of her heart, keeping her from achieving true happiness. She realised that ignoring her pain wouldn’t lead to healing; she had to face it.

In an arduous journey of self-discovery, Emma sought professional help. She started attending therapy sessions where she spoke about her deepest, darkest fears, her past pains, and her internal struggle. It was sometimes quite difficult, like peeling off layers of herself that she’d held intact for so long. Yet with each layer shed, she discovered more truths about herself and began to find clarity amidst the chaos and had an opportunity to heal her inner world.

During her treatment, Emma learned about her “inner child” – the carefree, innocent version of herself, broken by parents who were unable to provide her with the love she needed. Emma realised she needed to heal this inner child, to reach out to it with compassion, understanding, and above all, love.

So, she started to practice mindfulness, journeying into places of herself she’d never dared to explore before. Through meditation, and therapy she felt the gradual healing of her inner child, freeing her from the manacles of her past. Emma painted scenes from her childhood from a different perspective, not focusing on the pain, but finding beauty amidst the chaos. She tried to revisit the burdensome memories but with fresh, kinder eyes; seeing strength where she used to see fragility.

She had a realisation one serene morning during a meditation session when the pain of her past was no longer a sharp sting, but a dull throb that was receding. Young Emma was healing – being stitched together not with threads of pain, but threads of self-love and compassion.

Day by day, Emma discovered a new purpose – Her history of pain turned into a beacon of hope. In healing her past, she found her path and discovered the strength and resilience ingrained within her soul. She finally realised that in healing herself, she opened up a world where she could flourish, ensuring her life was filled with brilliant colours and never to be turned to black or greyscale as it once had been. She now had the skills and knowledge to cope with life’s ups and downs and the courage to reach out for help when needed.

Although this is a story of fiction, if you relate and wish to take a step towards a world of healing like Emma please reach out for help.
